She is generally credited with raising the morale of the French at a time when they had suffered a series of serious defeats by the English and their Burgundian allies.  

There was, it was thought, a real possbility that the English would suceed in making France a part of England or, at least, establishing the English king's claim to the French throne.

Inspired by Joan, the French managed to win some important battles and eventually, to end the English threat.
