  1. The Camargue of southern France is Europe's largest river delta.  It has big brine (salty) lagoons (étangs) that are not connected to the Mediterranean Sea. The lagoons are havens for many birds and other animals. Some areas are now protected and salt probably cannot be mined there. It also has natural salt pans, flat areas where water has evaporated leaving salt. People have been mining salt in the Camargue since at least the time of the Romans. People have built dikes and levees to make man-made salt pans.
