WHY THE OVERHEAD LINES SUPPLY is DELTA ONLY & not in STAR?

  1. They are mostly 'Y' connected, That very thin neutral

    is at the top of the tower or pole.

    All taps are "Delta" because it saves copper, both in the

    transformers, and in not giving that neutral anything

    to carry but 'reference` load.


  2. They aren't.  Most distribution lines in the US are wye connected.

    Using only delta connections allows you to set relays with very sensitive ground trips.

  3. I gotta disagree w/ the above 2.  Most lines here in California are delta.  Simple answer, one less wire to run for one, and there's no advantage to having it, since all loads can be driven via phase-to-phase voltages.
