South Ossetia is a breakaway territory from Georgia and the South Ossetians have been in conflict with the Georgian government since just before the dissolution of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s. Georgia launched a military attack on South Ossetia on Aug 7 and Russia responded with a counterattack also advancing into provinces of Georgia. A ceasefire was signed by Georgia and Russia on August 15.
