WHat do people mean when they ask whats up?

People always ask me, "whats up" and i never know what to say, so i just say, the sly or my ceiling Because I can't think of a real answer. SO when people say "whats up" what do they mean?

  1. What's going on? How are you? What's wrong?

    That's what they mean.  


  2. They are asking you to give them an update, of yourself naturally. "What's new?" Sometimes it could mean, "What do you need?"--anticipating that you're saying "hi" to them because you're going to ask them something. It's very casual though.

    I take it you're not from this country so basically it is just a phrase commonly used by Americans to say "how are you" or "how's it going"

    "nice to see you", etc. It's simply a informal or casual greeting.

  6. It means, what's wrong, what's the problem, what's the matter, or at least it does in the UK.
