  1. It means that the last time Saskatchewan was 5-0, the team were cave men, that's what it means.

  2. The modern era in the CFL began when the CFL was formed in 1958. Prior to that there were three football leagues in Canada that could compete for the Grey Cup. The IRFU (Interprovincial Rugby Union {I kid you not}), the WIFU (Western Interprovincial Football Union) and the ORFU (Ontario Rugby Football Union).

That is why there are some strange winners of the Grey Cup in early days.

The Saskatchewan (Regina) Roughriders were founded in 1910. Many records in the past were sealed when the new league was formed in 1958 with 9 teams (expansion into the USA increased the number of teams to 12 for two seasons). Because the pre CFL teams played under a number of different rules, it was agreed that with the merger in 1958 that the modern era would begin.

Thus the best football played in the world today is thriving and profitable.

  3. The formation of the CFL in 1958 is generally accepted as the beginning of the modern era in Canadian football.

There are a number of milestones in football that could've be used as beginnings for the modern era of Canadian football.

    1) the emergence of the forward pass

    2) an increase in roster so players didn't play offense & defense; specialists emerged.

    3) games were televised, making players household names outside of football.

What it really means is that the Grey Cup Champions are still the best team in the league w/o Kerry Joseph, and can still easily beat teams no matter who plays QB.
