I eventually want to build a privacy fence, either cedar or vinyl. Some say the vinyl chips and cracks and that its not all its cracked up to be and to go with wood, some say the opposite, so , i'm trying to get opinions on this, of course wood costs half of what vinly does, so thats a consideration.

  1. depending on the area that you live in, I personally would go with the vinyl, as long as it is uv protected

  2. Using redwood or cedar is going to cost a pretty penny and treated pine will cost less and last 10-15 years. Composite wood is going to again be costly but last the longest but it doesn't do too well standing vertical unsupported as it tends to twist.

Vinyl will work provided you invest and pay a little more for a denser material but it really doesn't bring that much as far as equity to your home. I'd go with treated pine followed up with a quality stain to get away from that funky green color.

<edits> Plus using vinyl requires a lot of extra work in prep as it has special anchoring systems for the posts where as wood requires a hole and a 80lb. bag of redimix concrete.
