  1. uhhh. I know nothing about rugby, but common sense tells me that a position that doesn't require fast running would be best.

  2. I think you should TRY something else,at 5'10 and only 170# the only position would be fly or scrum half.Being slow you have no chance.Take up Ballroom dancing???.

  3. Join a team the coach will find a suitable place for you. A couple more inches and a few more pounds and perhaps you might become a good Hooker Young man can grow up to the age of 20+.

  4. hmmmm its a hard pick mate if you are totally new to rugby then play in the flanks mate there  the easiest positions to learn very simple yet very direct tho you might not be quick enough for flanker straight away being 16 i think that youl just get faster with training but really the choice is up to you you might fancy your self as a  first five eight or second five or even center you  might like proping up the scrum or locking it  you might like being a half back or a eight man

  5. train hard gain a little more muscle, you could perhaps make a hooker!

Good luck it's a great game!!

  6. You won't regret it, it really does keep you fit and is the best sport in the world imo.

Your the same age as me, a little bit heavier but a little bit shorter, i play on the wing but i'm fast and elusive (good strength for my weight as well because i go to the gym a lot)

At 16 you could make a decent flanker if you're strong enough, if you're clever and a good passer and you can somehow increase your speed have a look at the centres or half backs, however these positions require you to be an expert kicker as well. All positions require you to be a fearless tackler.

This could all change though, your still growing and won't stop until your about 22. I predict i could have growth spurt pretty soon as i haven't gotten any taller in about a year, yes i still hold out hopes of becoming a second row. Keep putting on weight (make sure it's muscle not fat) and you could become a very very good back row forward.

    Positional physique guides:

Front Row - Massive upper body and lower body strength, at this age level you need to be upwards of 16 stone at least unless of course you're the hooker. (tighthead on my team is 18 stone)

Second Row - Tallest players on the pitch, at sixteen you would need to be abut 6'4 to make the grade. Also need a lot of strength.

Back Row - Obviously you need to be fairly big as it's still in the forwards but the main attributes are strength and stamina. You need to be quicker than the other forwards (not hard) in order to get to the breakdown first. You need to be the fittest players on the pitch to play back row as it's non-stop action.

Half Backs - Size not essential but is an advantage at fly-half. Main attributes are speed of thought, passing, kicking and tackling. Also you need to be a cocky b*stard to play at scrum half.

Centres - Good mix of strength and speed required, skill sets very similar to the half backs as the centres and half backs together form the creative hub of the team. You're the perfect build for this position but you need to get your speed up to scratch to play here.

Wings - You can go one of two ways here. fast and elusive eg' Me, Shane Williams, Bryan Habana. Or bulldozer eg' Jonah Lomu, Lote Tuqiri. Needs to be a competent kicker and very solid in defense.

Full Back - Generally very similar to wing, speed not as important but tackling is imperative to playing full back. As the last line of defence you need to take kicks and return them back up the field or run with them, make last ditch try saving tackles, know how to position yourself and know when to join the line of attack.

Just remember that your body is still changing rapidly, you could end up being 6'3 and 210lbs then you would make a quality prop at amatuer level. Even when you have stopped growing your weight will fluctuate and your skills will develop along with your strength and fitness.

Hope i've been of some healp, just make sure you enjoy it because what's the point if you don't?

  7. Hi

In NZ i guess your weight would be about 72kg which  is not too bad for a 16yr old. If you are not as fast as you say, than I would probably suggest no8 or blind side flanker your speed will probably improve as you get older especially in those two positions hope  that helps good luck.

  8. Flanker, even though you are small if you are a strong runner and can tackle well you should be fine, Neil Back was tiny and he was an international player, people told him he would never make it but he now has a World Cup medal, 6 nations, Heiniken Cup (2), Guniess Premiership, 2 Lions Tours and many more medals from his career.

  9. I think Ray K is spot on with his assessment.

  10. try back row if your strong but you need to be fit.i would know im only 13 and find it easy but when you get more experianced and need to run around more and up y6ou r work rate if gets diffucult

  11. In the Foward pack maybe front row
