Question:

WHat should we do in Belize City while on a cruise?

Our family is going on a cruise in December. Everyone is over 21 but we don't drink - Carnival Glory.

One of our ports is Bleize City, Belize. Does anyone know of what we should do there? We have looked over the shore excursions and thought possible snorkeling or the zoo and city tour. Is there something that would be more fun? I can't seem to find a lot of info about the area. I heard from someone that it was a little dangerous there but I find that hard to belive seeing as how a cruise ship is going there.

  1. Be sure to see the Mayan ruins.

  2. Belize is beautiful. And I did not feel unsafe at all. My family went cave tubing in the Rainforest and it was amazing. I also heard from others on the Valor that their snorkeling was excellent. I think they went to Ambegris Cay. Belize is like the Caribbean was 25 years ago. Unspoiled and beautiful. Have a great time.

  3. For something a bit different you could try a horseback riding shore excursion - you see the rainforest, wildlife, etc. from horseback and Banana Bank is a wonderful location.  We have been in Belize for about two years and have had a chance to go there several times - its great.  For cruise visitors, it is a one day deal and they take you back to the dock at the end of the day to catch your boat.

  4. Belize is beautiful but poor.  It is one of the few ports where it is neccessary to take an organized tour.  The port area is not real safe.  I would not take a tour of the city,  it is really not a nice city.  I would eithor do a snokle tour,  take a day trip to one of the cays or do one of the Mayan ruins tours.  Lamani is a fantastic site.

  5. I have been told that the beaches there are some of the best. However, belize city is a large city, so I would not stray from where the "tourist" areas are.

I am going in Sept, but I have a friend there who will be meeting us at the pier.  The best I could do is get some info from him, but you probably do not want to wait that long.

Belize does not seem to be a popular destination yet.  This could make it more tourist friendly.  Not like Nassau.  If I never get off a ship in Nassau again, it would not bother me.

  6. Belize City is not going to be your favorite port, I am certain of that.  I do not take cruises that go there anymore but if I did because of other ports I wanted to go to, I just wouldn't leave the ship while in port.  I just don't care for it, the island is not what I would consider a "cruise worthy" destination.  It's much like when the cruise ships used to go to places such as Haiti.  It was depressed, poor and the begging and poverty was so sad that I just could not go again.  It's one thing if you're on a mission to help poverty stricken countries, but you're on a cruise for vacation......places like Belize City, which is not as bad as Haiti but just about as depressing are not places I would want to visit when there are tons of other islands out there that have much more to offer.  Just my opinion but be aware that you might be going back to the ship shortly after you leave when you get to Belize City.  Other than that, have a wonderful time on board.  Cruises are the best vacation out there, bar none!!  (a true woman's vacation...no cooking, no cleaning, just relaxing and doing nothing....)ahhhhhhhh, I am going to go book a cruise right now!

  7. We went snorkeling at Goff's Cay. The tour picked us up at the ship and returned us to the ship so I never actually made it to Belize. UNfortunately I do not remeber who did our tour (We were on the Carnival Legend) but the boat was overfilled and dirty. The island itself was pristine and the snrokeling wonderful. Our table mated went onto the island and said that getting thru the shopping areas was brutal
