I've been flying a lot recently and I am always told to turn all electronic devices off until the lane gets to a height of 10,000 feet? My cousin always leaves his iPod on and then just goes to sleep. Why do they ask that?

  1. It's a safety precaution 'cos all electronic devices (radio, mobile, pda, etc) give out electronic signals which might interfer with the airplanes' instruments. A false reading at low altitude might cause the pilot to react wrong & resulting in an accident. My cousin had a HP calculator that gives out such a strong signal when he uses it the TV screen will flicker & the images get distorted. So, wake up that cousin of yours & tell him to wise up, don't be the one who's the cause of an airplane accident.

  2. That's because the airplane runs by a vibration or signal from down below. So if you have a phone and it rings and sends vibrations to the airplane the airplane could make a turn that it's not suppose to. Then you won't get to your destination.

Hope this helped. Please vote for me.

  3. It's an old FAA regulation. Back when electronics would interfere with magnetic navigation systems. I fly my own plane with very sophisticated navigation and no electronic device I have ever tried onboard has effected anything. I have tried everything that anyone would normally use in flight just to test my systems. Phones, on the other hand, create another problem. They trigger multiple cell towers from altitude. I'm not sure why that's a problem except for the possible billing issues.

  4. Consumer electronics do not interfere with an aircraft's systems.  I am always amazed that people think that all the aircraft in the world never have at least some mobile phones inadvertently left on during the flight.  The reason that you cannot use any electronics during takeoff and landing is because this is the time in which there is most likely to be a problem with the flight and they want everyone aware and alert in case something goes wrong, such as the need for an emergency landing.
