It's just a bad habit.  I've had some friends that do it, and they are ALWAYS biting them, but probably even more when they are nervous.  It's pretty foul, they bite them down until there is nothing left.  My Grandma promised my cousin a trip to Hawaii if he quit, and he still couldn't do it.

Its not a habit, some people bit their nails because it reliefs stresses. A psychological factor in a player's mind.
