I live in viriginia and I just had a baby boy 11 weeks premature. He is alimentum and will most likely come home on that formula. Its very expensive and I can't not afford it but he has to have it. I want to apply for wic but am afraid imay a little too much. Can someone explain to me the process at the appointment and what all I need to bring with me. And how it works and do they really turn you down? I know I'm suppose to bring the baby, but he is still in the nicu.

I have no clue as to how the wic prgram works? Can someone please give me some insight...I really don't know what to do!!!!

  1. Every state is different.  I would start by asking the nurses at the hospital for suggestions - they would be familiar with many programs available to you.  Next I would call the WIC office and ask about how they determine your income.  Sometimes they won't count commission, tips, etc. since those can change from month to month.  You may be able to bring in your tax return and they might go by your income after deductions also.  Most of the WIC employees seem to try really hard to help.  Since you won't need formula until your baby is discharged (and the hospital will give you free samples), make an appointment at WIC once you know your baby is coming home - you will get your vouchers that day!  (At least you do in MO)  Good luck and I wish you and your baby the best!

this website will tell you what to bring and to get the special formula you will probly need a letter from the doctor stating why.
