WIERDO ICH! HELP? What is with this?

Okay. I had an ich infestation after a complicated incident with my tanks.

I am currently treating 5 fish who were exposed. My question is this...

They were exposed at the same time. They were all medicated with the same treatments. Only ONE fish is struggling. He has the spots, is lethargic and gasping. The other four are active and healthy with no sores.

Is this normal? Why is only one fish struggling so horribly? I just can't seem to get the one guy healthy.

Any experience? Advice?

  1. The best stuff to use in called quick cure. Its under 3 dollars at petsmart

  2. That often happens.  That fish may have a weakened immune system or just isn't as healthy or strong as the other fish.  It's not different than humans.  Some avoid disease and others get everything that goes around.

  3. It sounds like Ich isn't the only thing you're dealing with.  White sores sound more like fungus infecting the damaged tissue from the Ich infection, though the fungus should be susceptible to most Ich medications (malachite green, formalin, copper, salt, etc.).  I wouldn't up the dosage just yet, because as Mokey pointed out, fish will have different immune strength genetically, and some will do less well with medications.  What are the fish in question?  What medication are you treating with?  What temperature is the tank at?

EDIT: "Appropriate antibiotics"?  Why are you using anything more than Coppersafe?  If it is a very "perfect" fancy, there is a good chance it just isn't as strong due to the generations of selective breeding it was forced to undergo.  Even if you can cure this case, there is a fairly good chance it will get sick again in the future, assuming it is genetically weaker.  I would cut out the "appropriate antibiotics" and leave it to the Coppersafe alone.
