Can I just put any HDMI cable into the WII to make it in HD, or do I have to buy special cables to play in HD. Or, is HD not supported on the WII.

  1. The Wii does not support HDMI.  The wii comes with Composite cables, and you can buy Component cables.

With the Composite cables, you'll get standard def 480i.

With the Component cables, you'll only get up to 480p.  It is an imporovement, and I'd recommend it, but currently the Wii does not support resolutions higher than 480p.

  2. The Wii does not support HDMI, not sure where you got that idea. The Wii comes in box with Composite cables (Red, White- Audio, Yellow- Video) and you can buy Wii specific Component cables.

With the Composite cables, you'll get standard definition which is 576i, and if your TV supports it 480i (60hz). It's also widescreen, which is good.

With the Wii specific Component cables, you will get up to 480p which is enhanced definition. It is most certainly a visible improvement depending on the size of your TV. I'd recommend it and the difference is significant as I'm using a 60" Telly. The Wii currently does not support resolutions higher than 480p and I doubt it ever will. It would be cool if Nintendo gave us a firmware upgrade to go into 576p or 720p, then we'll be cooking! Then again, chances that happening and extremely low.
