Hi-

My laptop recently developed a problem. It shut down a few days ago and since then, I havn't been able to start it.

When I press the power button, the LEDs light up and COMPAQ flashes on the screen but after that, the screen goes black and sits there. Nothing happens. If it is black for more than 15 seconds, any time I hit a key...a small chirp will sound off. The only progress I have been able to make with it is when COMPAQ flashes on the screen, I discovered that if I press F8, it takes me to the BOOT SCREEN where I have many options of how to boot Windows. (Safe Mode, Last Known Working Configuration, Debugging Mode, etc.) I have tried all of the available options and none of them work.

Please, if anyone can help...I would appreciate it.

Thanks.

  2. hi boot from the xp cd select recovert and recovery console, this will drop you to a black dos type screen > type logon to access your installation and then chkdsk /r might take a while more on xp fixes below

  3. sounds like either a corrupted hard drive or your bios crashed.  either way try changing the settings to boot from disc first, and put your recovery disc in and try booting from there

  4. If nothing works, including booting into safe-mode, it looks like you're going to have to re-install XP from the disc.
