WNBA Roundup 25th May, 2012: Connecticut Sun, Atlanta Dream and Indiana Fever bag wins - Update
A total of three matches were played on Friday 25th May in the Women`s National Basketball Association (WNBA). In the first match of the night Connecticut Sun defeated the San Antonio Silver Stars to record their third consecutive win to start the season.
In the second game, Atlanta Dream handed out a thrashing to the visiting New York Liberty and in the third and final match, Indiana Fever came out winners over the Chicago Sky.
1. Connecticut Sun versus San Antonio Silver Stars
This matchup took place on Friday night at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville. The Suns came out winners over the Silver Stars 83-79 with Tina Charles leading her team with 18 points and 8 rebounds. She also became the fastest player to cross the 800 rebound mark in the league.
Renee Montgomery came off the bench to lead the Sun with 23 points on a 8 of 16 shooting night. Asjha Jones also played well for 16 points while Kara Lawson also lent a helping hand with 13 points.
For the San Antonio team, Danielle Adams led the way with 21 points. Shameka Christon came off the bench to lend her a helping hand with 14 points whereas Becky Hammon and Danielle Robinson chipped in with 11 and 10 points respectively.
Both teams were almost equally matched up in all aspects of the game. Connecticut collected 35 rebounds whereas the Silver Stars were able to grab 31 boards on the night. There were a high number of turnovers from both sides as they combined to commit 29 turnovers on the night.
2. Atlanta Dream versus New York Liberty
Atlanta Dream handed out a 26 point drubbing to the visiting New York Liberty, winning the match with the score line being 100-74. Angel McCoughtry led Atlanta`s effort with 23 points to go along with 7 assists and 5 rebounds in the game.
Lindsey Harding was not far behind with 19 points of her own while Yelena Leuchanka chipped in 10 points to the score. It was a total team effort from this Dream unit as every one of their 11 players got their names on the score sheet.
Despite having 5 players scoring in double figures, Liberty's effort came up way short. They have now lost 4 straight games to start the season. Cappie Pondexter was the leading scorer for this New York side with 18 points.
Essence Carson hit three triples in the game to finish off with 15 points. Plenette Pierson notched up a double-double in the game with figures of 11 points and 10 boards. Kara Braxton chipped in 11 points while Kia Vaughn came off the bench to chip in with 11 points.
Atlanta out-rebounded the New York side 37- 29 in the game with 13 of them coming on the offensive glass and also forced the Liberty to commit 22 turnovers in the game.
3. Indiana Fever versus Chicago Sky
On Friday night at the Allstate Arena, Indiana Fever defeated the Chicago Sky 83-72. The win was made possible by a final quarter push by Fever.
Indiana effort was paced by Tamika Catchings, who is the reigning MVP of the league. She was the top scorer in this one as well with 22 points on a 7 of 14 shooting performance. She was followed up by Katie Douglas who finished the game with 21 points on a 8 of 11 shooting night.
Jessica Davenport came off the bench to chip 12 points to the Fever cause in the game and Shavonte Zellous chipped in 9 points to go along with 7 rebounds on the night.
On the other hand, Chicago, were led by Sylvia Fowles who finished the game with 21 points. Epiphanny Prince followed her up with 17 points and Eshaya Murphy came off the bench to chip in 10 points in the ball game.
The resilience of this Indiana team can depicted from the fact that they were outrebounded 27-25 in the game but they never gave up on the game and forced the Chicago side to commit a high number of 22 turnovers in the game.
