New York Liberty and Connecticut Sun win - WNBA Roundup August 16, 2011: Part 1
Five games took place in Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) on Tuesday, August 16, 2011. Here is a brief review of the games:
New York Liberty 69 – Washington Mystics 66
At Prudential Center, Cappie Pondexter made a go-ahead driving basket with 13.5 seconds to go as New York Liberty snapped their two-game losing streak with a 69-66 victory over the slumping Washington Mystics. It was Mystics’ second
straight loss.
Pondexter ended with a game-high 26 points, six rebounds and two assists in more than 33 minutes. Plenette Pierson also racked up 16 points on a 7 for 10 shooting from the floor for the Liberty. Crystal Langhorne led the Mystics
with 25 points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals while Matee Ajavon added 12 points, five assists and three rebounds in the loss.
New York shot 43.3 percent from the floor and 76.5 percent from free throw line while Washington shot 43.1 percent from the field and 73.9 percent from the line.
New York got off to an impressive start and held a 13-point lead, 24-11, at the end of the first quarter. Washington outscored Liberty 16-12 in the second quarter and trimmed their deficit to nine points, 36-27, at halftime. Mystics
held New York to just 13 points, and showed only seven down at the end of the third period.
Mystics continued to fight back and when Ajavon hit a three-pointer with 25 seconds to go in the fourth quarter finally gave Washington their first lead of the game at 66-65. Pondexter however responded with a go-ahead lay-up to
make it 67-66 and Nicole Powell and Pierson then hit free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.
Connecticut Sun 108 - Minnesota Lynx 79
Tina Charles recorded a double-double with a game best 18 rebounds and 16 points as Connecticut Sun defeated the league-leading Minnesota Lynx 108-79 at Mohegan Sun Arena. It was second consecutive victory for Connecticut and the
largest margin of defeat for Minnesota so far in this season.
Renee Montgomery punctuated a team-high 17 points and seven assists while Kara Lawson also came off the bench with 16 points and four assists in the victory. Connecticut’s guard Lawson hit 4 of 5 shots from down town in more than
20 minutes. Asjha Jones added 15 points, six rebounds and two blocks while Kelsey Griffin had 14 points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals for the Sun.
Lindsay Whalen led Minnesota with 20 points on a 7 for 11 from the field and 5 for 5 from free throw line. Rebekkah Brunson and Seimone Augustus chipped in with 11 points each for Lynx, who saw their two-game winning streak halted.
Connecticut shot 52.8 percent from the field and limited the visiting team to just 42.5 percent. Charles scored 13 of her points in the first half as Connecticut held a 57-42 lead at halftime. Sun stretched their lead to 18 points,
80-62, at the end of third quarter and were never hassled in the final frame.
