Dunno about Jersey, but in New Jersey, a gun or armed guard might be good to have, depending on where you go.

For european driving you're supposed to carry a warning triangle, first aid kit, fire extinguisher and spare bulbs, but I reckon you will get away without in Jersey. The authorities are fairly laid back.
