  1. take ur laptop and go out and try whether it works for u. U can turn off the firewall but there will be chances that your laptop will get infected with viruses

  2. definitely turn your firewall on.  It should have no effect as far as preventing you from access a wifi hotspot.

leaving it off is like standing in the middle of a highway.  You might not get hit in the first few minutes, but you're going to get nailed eventually.

and since this is a used laptop, be sure and check that you have antivirus software installed and running on it.  And that it's being updated on a regular basis with new virus definition files.  Otherwise, even with your firewall on, you might as well get back out in the middle of the highway again.

  3. You should be able to have it on and be able to access all of the Library's wifi resources. Its really hard to say because I don't know the configuration of the library wifi or the configuration of you notebook but when I go to my library I always have my firewall on and never had a problem.

  4. yes it should be able to get on even when firewall is turned on, if its a windows firewall it automatically will allow internet explorer to go through and other ms software, if you use firefox you might need to allow it on the firewall or add an exception.
