  1. Basically you want to charge a battery with a solar cell.

You need an inverter DC  /  AC or try to skip the converter in the UPS and filter it to the battery. The UPS will output AC from the battery so no need for an additional inverter.

Give us more info on your UPS and we can show you how to perform the task. Shouldn't be that complicated but it will be very expensive and once you've charged the UPS battery what are you going to use the solar cell for? Could be much more expensive then just using household electricity to charge the battery and a lot slower.

I'm guessing you won't be near electricity.. give us more details like application and what equipment you have in mind.

  2. Find out the voltage and current requirement of your battery. Usually the are 12 volts so you will need a 14 volt or higher solar cell, plus a controller that will regulate the amount of current into the battery. The current requirement, ie, how fast do you want to charge it, will determine the power level of the solar panel.

Assuming your battery is 20 amp hours and is 12v, then the battery holds about 240 watt-hours of charge.  If you want to charge in 4 hours of sunlight, that will take a power of 240 watt-hours divided by 4 hours or 80 watts.

So in this example, you need a 80 watt 15 volt array. These are about $400. You will also need a charge controller, about $100.

Cheaper alternative: get an array that will just trickle charge the battery, about 1 amp, or a 15 watt array. You can skip the controller at that level. cost can be less than $100.

Calculate how much this will save you per year before you go ahead.

using an expensive solar array just to recharge your UPS battery means the array is doing nothing most of the time.

  3. If you don't care about the cost, buy American Power Conversion and ask one of your smart new engineers to do it for you. Should be a couple billion dollars or so.
