Question:

WPA2-PSK vs. WPA-PSK?

So I was fiddling with my router settings, and I have 5 options for the wireless network authentication:

1. WEP-Shared

2. WEP-Open

3. WPA-PSK

4. WPA2-PSK

5. WPA2-PSK and WPA-PSK

I was wondering what each of these are, and if any particular option was more secure than another. As of now all computers hooked up to the router are PC's with Vista installed, and also a Nintendo Wii. Thanks for help!

  1. WPA2-PSK is the best

I think the order for you would be 4, 5,3,2,1

I would NEVER use WEP.  Too easy to crack.

WPA is decent and will work with older NICs.

WPA2 is by far the best choice.

Ensure you make your Preshared Key LONG and use Upper, Lower, Numbers and Characters (such as I So Need The Money = EYEson33dda$$ (Eye So N33D DA $$)

  2. WEP is horribly insecure, don't use it.

WPA is better (PSK means it is a pre-shared key, the easiest and best supported means of using passwords)

WPA2 is better still, but doesn't have as much support as original WPA. Option 5 users WPA2 where possible but lets older WPA only clients connect using that.
