WPBSA Chairman Jason Ferguson clarifies pros and cons of World Snooker contract
Snooker governing body, World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association (WPBSA) is having another conflict with the four-time World Snooker Championship winner, England’s Ronnie O’Sullivan. Recently the reigning World Snooker Champion refused to sign
the contract with the WPBSA saying that he does not want to play in the recent season and needs to have a break.
The reasons behind his actions are still unconfirmed but he did hint that after he clinched his fourth World Snooker Championship title. He told the press that he did not sign the contract because he does not want to play all competitions on the calendar.
Recently, World Snooker added a couple of more events into the existing calendar which received a bit of resistance from the senior players.
Meanwhile, the WPBSA Chairman, Jason Ferguson has made clear the pros and cons of WPBSA contract. He explained that a player can choose the event he wants to play still in order to play he must need the contract because all players have an agreement and
they abide by the rules to play in any snooker event. Same way, O’Sullivan can choose any event to play but for that he must sign the contract
Speaking to the local media, Ferguson said, “The contract was sent to the players by World Snooker following an extensive consultation process with the WPBSA in which we engaged our lawyers. It is the WPBSA's duty to ensure that all of the players are treated
equally and therefore it is our belief that all players should sign the same contract.”
He added, “We do not believe it would be in the interest of the membership as a whole if one player was allowed a different contract which could give that player additional appearance money.”
After winning the World title, O’Sullivan told the media that he will have a break and will not take part in many snooker tournaments because he believed that the calendar has many tournaments which do not allow the players to have some spare time for their
friends and families. He asked World Snooker not to add so many tournaments in the calendar.
