WPBSA fines Mark Williams for negative tweets about Crucible Theatre – Snooker News
World Snooker Championship 2012 successfully finished at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield featuring the Rocket, Ronnie O’Sullivan as the champion. However, the mega event witnessed some tremendous moments but at the same time, some players were not happy
with the proceedings.
Former two-time World Snooker Champion, Mark Williams also did not like the environment at the venue and made some statements on the Twitter about the Crucible Theatre. The comments were a bit negative as he commented that the Crucible Theatre is a sh**hole
and he would rather play at Pontins. He also said that he wants to see the World Snooker Championship in China.
His remarks about the venue were criticised and the snooker governing body, World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association (WPBSA) took it offensively and launched an inquiry. After completing the investigation, the WPBSA has fined the former champion
£3,000 along with £1,000 to the cost of hearing for making offensive comments about the Crucible Theatre on Twitter.
According to the reports, the Welsh Potting Machine violated the following rules and regulation:
1.1 Members shall, at all times (i.e. whether at a Tournament or not), behave in a proper and correct manner consistent with their status as professional sportsmen…….
1.2 A Member shall not make or cause to be made any statement or commit or cause to be committed any act which in the reasonable view of the WPBSA is likely to bring into disrepute the games of snooker and/or billiards.
WPBSA made an announcement, “The Disciplinary Committee of the WPBSA formally considered the case of Mark Williams. This relates to derogatory comments he made on Twitter regarding the Crucible Theatre, Sheffield on the 20th April 2012, the eve of the Betfred.com
World Championship at the Crucible Theatre. He was fined £3,000 and ordered to pay £1,000 towards the costs of the hearing.”
On Williams’ remarks on Twitter, the World Snooker Chairman, Barry Hearn said that the Crucible Theatre will remain the venue for the World Snooker Championship until he dies. The World Snooker Championship is being staged at the Crucible Theatre for the
last 40 year. The venue has a unique importance in the world of snooker and attracts thousands of snooker fans every year.
