WPBSA investigates suspicious betting on Jimmy White defeats – Snooker News
Recently, one of the leading UK news medium, the Daily Star Sunday, unveiled hidden truth about suspicious betting over the legendary potter Jimmy White’s loss. This happened when they found out that one of his die hard snooker fans and a close friend, John
Callaghan, has made a lot of money by betting over his defeat in some certain matches which has raised many doubts about the veteran cueman.
The Daily Star Sunday interviewed Callaghan about the betting and he instantly denied any involvement of White in his bets. He also revealed that his betting was not suspicious or planted.
During his interview, he said, “Jimmy knows nothing about the bets. He’s the most honest man you could ever meet. I’m just a friend and fan. I’ve helped him a few times but I’ve never worked for Jimmy in my life. I can understand how people might think
there’s something dodgy going on but they’re wrong. They’ve added two and two and got five.”
According to the reports, Callaghan placed his bets via his email address that is White’s official website. However, the news story has prompted the snooker governing body, World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association (WPBSA) to look into the matter
and take action if there is any suspicious betting.
The association said in a statement, “The WPBSA take very seriously any allegations of betting irregularities in relation to snooker. Where any such information is received we will carefully examine the circumstance and liaise with the betting industry
and Gambling Commission to decide whether an investigation is merited.”
Former six-time World Snooker Championship finalist, England’s Jimmy White has not been performing according to expectations from the past couple of seasons. He crashed out of qualifying rounds of many major ranking snooker events and never made his way
into the initial stages of those events.
In the 2012 World Snooker Championship, the Whirlwind crashed out of the qualifiers at the hands of China’s Liu Chuang by the score line of 10-8.
In the recent snooker season, he failed to win against India’s Aditya Mehta in the third round of 2012 Wuxi Classic qualifiers and lost to him by 5-1. Meanwhile, the veteran potter did not take part in the qualifying session of the 2012 Australian Goldfields
Open snooker tournament.
