WR Torrey Smith recovers from hernia surgery to join Baltimore Ravens’ offseason workout-NFL News
The Baltimore Ravens have set hopes for return of their wide receiver, Torrey Smith, from a hernia surgery to join the squad for the team’s offseason workout programme, starting from Monday, April 16, 2012.
Smith has been working on his recovery and rehab from the surgery he had in January 2012. Both sides have now confirmed him to have fully recovered, healthy and fit for joining the squad from the start of preparations for the next season.
Although the player said to be okay to play with the problem without any issue, he opted to get it cleared once and for all during the offseason.
The decision proved to be a right one for him as he has fully recovered now and well in advance to the expected timeline. He said that he had been dealing with the injury "from about Week 3 on."
He added:
"There were multiple [tissue] tears. It was one of those injuries where you could play with it or get it fixed. But it wasn’t one of those injuries where I wasn’t able to run, period, so I kept playing with it."
Smith had a tremendous last season before suffering the setback. He now aims to prove his worth this year, which is not very far given that Ravens are starting their next season’s preparations from next week.
In spite of his problem, Smith had a record rookie year at Ravens. His record included 50 interceptions for about receiving of 841 yards. He was able to add seven touchdowns in his overall performance of the year.
Ravens have made it to the National Football League (NFL) playoffs for four consecutive years, but were unable to get past the second round in all those attempts.
Still, the managers and owner of the team are hopeful of getting opportunities to compete for a Super Bowl title in the future.
The team is coming out on the field for the 2012 NFL regular season campaign with the significant change of a fulltime offensive coach.
Former Indianapolis Colts’ head coach, Jim Caldwell, has been added as the quarterbacks’ coach and the move is going to benefit Ravens’ attack line, led by the quarterback, Joe Flacco.
However, Flacco’s comeback remains uncertain so far given that the player is still waiting to start negotiations on his new deal with the management, which is seeking delays in the process.
Flacco is said to be holding ambitions for an expensive deal and has already issued self-measured ratings to be the best QB in the league to support his cause.
Ravens have recently bucked the trend and awarded a $50 million six-year deal to cornerback, Lardarius Webb, and Flacco, apparently is looking for something similar or even better.
No one knows of both sides’ alternatives in case their potential talks end without a breakthrough.
