WR-thin Houston Texans aim Mike Sims-Walker signing -NFL News
Houston Texans are seeking to consolidate players’ strength at the wide receiver position, which looks very thin at the moment.
Following the departure of Jacoby Jones to the Baltimore Ravens and lingering injury problems with Andre Johnson, Texans have found themselves in a dire situation.
A section of media has reported that as a part of their efforts to bring in new WRs, Texans are hosting free agent WR, Mike Sims-Walker, for a workout on Wednesday, May 30.
He can become first significant signing by the team since departure of Jones, provided his workout impresses the management.
Johnson missed most part of the 2011 National Football League (NFL) season with a hamstring injury. The injury had affected his career twice in the past season.
The team had been hopeful of him coming out in organised team activities (OTAs) as fully healthy and fit.
Instead, the player has undergone an arthroscopic surgery on his knee. He is likely to take about a month for recovery and rehab.
Texans are confident that he will return to the squad well before the start of the regular season in September.
His return looks certain within the stipulated timeframe unless he suffers a setback in the recovery, which given his poor health record can be a possibility.
Johnson remains the key to the team’s performance and his absence will not bode well with their hopes of reaching the playoffs and beyond this season.
For the first time in their franchise history, Texans made it to the second round of the NFL in 2011 by winning the American Football Conference (AFC) South division title.
The team is coming into the 2012 NFL season as a Super Bowl contender and the injury scares serve no good to their cause.
The good news for them is that their leading quarterback, Matt Schaub, is back from a knee injury to join the squad.
Johnson’s injury, however, looks to add to their WR worries, especially if the player is unable to recover from the knee surgery in time.
Their situation at the backup receiver positions is even worse and to solve this they are looking to bring in new players.
