Question:

WSI Training + Lifeguard recertification?

I'm a junior in high school and summer is almost starting. I am hoping to get WSI training done, if not it's ok but I teach lessons anyways as a club swimmer.

The pool where I work is having a training day but unfortunately I have SAT's. So I either have to cancel SAT's or find another place to get recertified.

What can be done online if anything? is it too late to sign up for classes? How do the red cross sign ups online work? I can't quite figure it out.

  1. If it's American Red Cross Lifeguarding you can recertify two different ways:

    1.  Take a Recertification Class

    2.  Recertify by Challenge.  That is, at the end of a regular Lifeguard Class you can come in and do the final skills tests plus the written test.  You must have the permission of the Lifeguard Instructor to do this, and not all Instructors allow it.

In either case, contact your American Red Cross Chapter(or YMCA, or check the Ellis & Assoc. website, if these are your certifications).  In most areas there will be recertification classes offered for the next couple of weeks, at least.

WSI certification is a different story.  You must be at least 17 years old before starting the class, and the class normally runs a minimum of 40 hours, often several hours more.  Again, check with your American Red Cross chapter as soon as possible.  Some areas offer an intense course of 5-days duration around this time of the year, right as most public pools are gearing up for the season.

Take your SATs!  That's more important!
