WTA 2010 China Open; Vera Zvonareva breezes into the semi final
The second seed Russian Vera Zvonareva got the better of her Italian tennis foe, Francesca Schiavone, a fifth seed player, to advance into the semi final round of the WTA 2010 China Open Singles Competition on Friday. The final
match score was 6-0 6-2.
World number four Zvonareva was one of the hottest contenders in the WTA tour in 2010, advancing into the title battle at the grass court Grand Slam as well as the United States Open in New York. The thirty year old Francesca on
the other hand, who is currently ranked number six in the world also registered her best performance this May, winning the trophy at the Roland Garros this year.
However, the Italian was totally outclassed by her twenty six year old opponent in her clash today at the China Open as Vera dominated right from the start and didn’t let Schiavone bounce back at any stage of the game.
The Russian in her interview after the match on Friday explained, “I started really well, and I was able to keep up with the level of my game from the first ball to the last ball and never really gave her any opportunity to get
into the match."
She further added, "Going in the match, obviously I expected a very, very hard match. It was tough. It was very tough for me on the court, because I had to keep that concentration even though from the side it may look like it was
an easy clash, but there are no easy matches in an event like this."
Francesca, despite attempting to bounce back in the decisive set of the match couldn’t come back and the inform Vera closed out the set 6-2 to record her tenth victory in a row versus the Italian.
Vera as a result of this victory will take on the winner of the match between Anastasija Sevastova and Li Na in the semi final round of the China Open on Saturday. Sevastova upset the fourth seed Australian Samantha Stosur as well
as Nadia Petrova on her way into the quarter final round in Beijing.
When asked about her semi final match, the Russian said that it is definitely going to be a close match however she is all set to come out strongly on the big day.
