The top seeded Australian tennis ace, Samantha Stosur reached the semifinal round of the WTA Bank of the West Classic at Stanford yesterday after knocking down the American tennis ace, Christina McHale 6-1, 7-5. It was the first time that Stosur participated in a match after moving to the fifth spot in the ATP world rankings.
Born on 30 March 1984 in the city of Queensland, the Australian tennis star, Samantha Jane Stosur is a professional player who participates both in singles as well as doubles contests. In the past, right handed Stosur was the number one doubles player on the WTA Tour along with the American tennis player, Lisa Raymond.
As far as her singles performances are concerned, the Australian tennis ace, Samantha Stosur has won against a couple of hard opponents on all sorts of surfaces such as Jelena Jankovic, Lindsay Davenport, Ana Ivanovic, Serena Williams, Justine Henin, Dinara Safina as well as Amelie Mauresmo. Currently, she is listed as number five both in doubles as well as the singles rankings.
While talking about her 2010 major performances, Stosur has so far won a total of thirty five single matches and lost ten. As far as her doubles record is concerned, she has succeeded in fourteen clashes and had fallen down in a total of seven doubles matches. At the Grand Slam hard court, the Australian Open championship, the twenty six year old Stosur did well to reach the quarterfinal round where she was knocked down by the top ranked tennis ace, Serena Williams.
Later on, Stosur in the second Grand Slam tournament of the season, the French Open championship, appeared as one of the top seeded players to win the competition as a result of her performance back in 2009.
Stosur did well to manage the pressure as well as the expectations of her fans and became the first Australian women to make her way into the final of the Grand Slam tournament after knocking down a couple of big names including Serena Williams, Justine Henin, Jelena Jankovic and a number of others. In her final battle, she met Francesca Schiavone, an Italian tennis star who knocked her down with a final match score of 4–6, 6–7 in a total of two sets.
At the grass court Grand Slam tournament last month, Stosur was defeated by Kaia Kanepi in the very first round of the tournament. However, still the Australian tennis ace managed to reach her career high rankings of number five in the world. While commenting on her top ranking after her victory at Stanford, Stosur said,
"It feels great to be here. It was my dream from the initial phases of my career to reach the top ten lists and luckily when I got a place in the top ten rankings list, it served as a confidence booster for me and I kept on playing even better and so here I am with my highest ranking of number five in the world”.
"It has not happened as a fluke to me, instead I have been working extremely hard to be there and so I have been rewarded for my past performances and I now I feel that nothing is impossible in the world”, she added.
"Once you perform well, it actually boosts up your confidence to play even better the next time. Another interesting fact is that, I have not altered my game, the only thing I learnt over the recent past is to play my game with accuracy and consistency”, Stosur stated.
In her next match at the WTA Bank of the West Classic, Stosur will face a Belgian tennis star Yanina Wickmayer at Stanford who previously knocked down Dominika Cibulkova with a final match score of 6-1, 6-4.
Let us see who turns out to be the semi final winner, the Australian tennis ace, Samantha Stosur or the Slovakian tennis star Yanina Wickmayer.
