WTA Korea Open & Tashkent Open tennis tournament updates
The former top ranked women’s tennis player, Ana Ivanovic was sent out of the WTA Korea Open tennis tournament on Wednesday. However, there was some good news for Dinara Safina, who continued her return from injury with a fighting victory.
The twenty-two year old tennis ace from Serbia, who captured the clay court French Open trophy back in 2008 before her slide down the rankings, blew an opening set lead versus her Russian tennis foe, Vera Dushevina to crash out in the first round in a total
of three sets. The final match score was 2-6, 6-4, 6-2.
It was a disappointing end for Ana, who earlier reached the round of sixteen this month at the year’s final major, the United States Open tennis tournament as she is hoping to regain her rhythm under the guidance of her coach, Heinz Guenthardt.
Dinara, also a former top ranked tennis ace, fared better, overpowering her Romanian tennis foe, Simona Halep in a total of two sets on Wednesday. The final match score was 6-4, 6-4.
The Russian tennis player was given a wildcard as she battles back from a lower back injury and will next meet her compatriot tennis player, Maria Kirilenko who is seeded number three to win the title. Maria made her way into the next round of the Korea
Open tennis tournament after beating Urszula Radwanska from Poland in straight sets.
In some other matches, the thirty-nine year old, Kimiko Date Krumm, who is also the last year’s winner, did well to get the better of her fellow Japanese opponent, Junri Namigata whereas the second seeded Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova from Russia brushed aside
Anastasia Rodionova from Australia on Wednesday.
Strong-hitting Nadia Petrova, who is seeded number one in Seoul to win the title also got past Jarmila Groth in a total of two sets. The final match score was 6-3, 6-2. Jarmila came in Seoul after capturing her maiden WTA trophy at the Guangzhou Open in
China on Sunday.
In some other action in Tashkent, the top seeded tennis player, Alexandra Dulgheru of Romania hammered down Ekaterina Bychkova in a total of three sets. The final match score was 4-6, 6-1, 7-5. As a result of this victory, Alexandra has made her way into
the quarterfinal round of the Tashkent Open tennis tournament.
The second seeded Akgul Amanmuradova from Uzbekistan also progressed, defeating her American Veteran tennis foe, Jill Craybas in a three setter clash. The final match score was 7-5, 6-7 (6), 6-2.
Stefanie Voegele from Switzerland also made her way into her second quarter-final round this year, knocking down her eighth-seeded opponent, Maria Elena Camerin from Italy in a total of two sets on Wednesday. The final match score was 6-4, 6-1.
"I have played her on two occasions and neither won any. In today’s match, I tried to play almost every single point against her, however, it was hard to work for every point”, said Voegele after the match.
Also, on Wednesday, Darya Kustova from Belarus got the better of her sixth seeded opponent, Magdalena Rybarikova in a total of three sets. The final match score was 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.
The world number twenty-seven Dulgheru, who captured her second career trophy in May this year, won a total of four games in a row during the second set of the match.
"I am glad that I survived in today’s clash. It was a tight one. I did commit some crucial mistakes which actually took the clash into a tight finish. Bychkova performed well, however, I am happy that I won it in the end”, Dulgheru said on Wednesday.
In today’s quarter-finals, Dulgheru is slated to take on Monica Niculescu, seeded fifth, who got past her Russian tennis foe, Ekaterina Ivanova in a total of three sets. The final match score was 0-6, 6-0, and 6-1.
