WTA Players with most wins over the world number ones – Tennis Special
The following is the list of active players who have been able to demolish the reigning world number one’s for the maximum number of times. There is no doubt that the list is topped by the Williams sisters who had ruled the world
of tennis for a mammoth time period.
Venus Williams
She is definitely a no surprise to be up there. She has been able to oust the number one player 13 times that includes five different players. However her head-to-head record is negative overall, 13-19, against the top ranked players
but still, she tops the list with the most wins.
The players that fell in her trap are Martina Hingis, Lindsay Davenport, Jelena Jankovic, Dinara Safina and her sister Serena. She defeated the Swiss tennis icon, Hingis, for the record eight times; Davenport lost to her twice
whilst other players were dumped once in the supreme era.
Serena Williams
Another world class act and the quarter-finalist of the Miami tournament earlier this week, Serena Williams, has won 12 times against the world number one players. She is the only player in the list who has a positive head-to-head
record against number one players; 12-11.
Hingis lost to her five times when she was number one in the world. Jennifer Capriati and Justine Henin were ousted twice whilst the last-ranked world number one, Caroline Wozniacki and her sister, Venus, lost to her once in their
classic memorable era.
Kim Clijsters
A terrific Belgian player who ousted top ranked players for six times in her career is also a former world number one herself. She twice plonked the Dane player, Wozniacki and registered one wins apiece against Davenport, Hingis,
Serena and Venus. She is currently struggling from a right hip injury and probably needs a month to recover from that.
Svetlana Kuznetsova
A powerhouse from Russia, Svetlana Kuznetsova, has also defeated world number one players six times in her career to date but she is below the Belgian due to her poor head-to-head record of 6-14 against top ranked players compared
to 6-12 of the Belgian.
Her victims include the likes of Henin, Amelie Mauresmo, Safina. All of them lost to her twice in their era of world domination.
Maria Sharapova
The Russian beauty starlet has been able to power down the world number ones for five times in her career. She has defeated Davenport twice before ousting Henin, Mauresomo and Wozniacki once in their best part of the career.
Vera Zvonareva
Zvonareva defeated Jankovic and Sharapova once before powering down the Dane starlet, Wozniacki, twice last year.
Marion Bartoli
After her mammoth triumph in the quarter-final of the Sony Ericsson Open against the reigning world number one, Victoria Azarenka, the French tennis ace becomes the seventh player in the active players list to have defeated the
world number ones for the most number of times. Her other two victories came against Henin and Jankovic.
Jelena Jankovic
Jankovic has trounced Safina twice and Serena once that keeps her in the list at the eighth spot.
Nadia Petrova
Nadia Petrova has also defeated Henin, Mauresmo and Serena once when they were ranked world number ones.
