WTA Tournament: Final four players in Doha
The Belgian Kim Clijsters fired an ace on a match point to get the better of Victoria Azarenka in a three setter match at the WTA Tournament in Doha on Thursday. The final score line was 6-4, 5-7, 6-1.
As a result of this victory, Clijsters confirmed her spot in the semi final round of the tournament. She along with Caroline Wozniacki, Samantha Stosur and Vera Zvonareva have made it into the final four line up this year at Doha.
After losing a close sixty five minutes second set, it was all Kim in the decisive set as she required only twenty six minutes registering her ninth victory in a row on the WTA tour. The Belgian went 7-0 to capture the United States Open title and also triumphed
in her opening match in Doha.
Clijsters, after the match, said, "It was obviously disappointing to lose that second set as it was so close. She dropped her level a little bit in the third set and everything she was doing well in the second set, she kind of lost that a little. I just
tried to be aggressive and focused, and not let her get back in the match."
Azarenka, on the other hand, said that she will work hard and improve her game in order to perform better when she comes here next year.
Kim is now 2-0 in her group, as is Vera and both of them will square off in the next match of the tournament, with the winner to end as number one in their group and the other as number two. Victoria and Jankovic, both 0-2 so far, will also contest to determine
the third and fourth position in the group.
The top two in the other group settled with Samantha as number one and Caroline as number two. Elena and Francesca will play for the third spot.
Just before Kim and Victoria took the centre court, Caroline earned the season end world number one ranking by brushing aside Schiavone in a three setter clash with a score line of 3-6, 6-1, 6-1, rolling past the crafty Italian after being downed by her
in the opening set.
"When you are playing the tournament, the only thing you are thinking of in your matches is winning them but being number one and winning Grand Slams are things I have dreamed about since I was a little girl. I am very happy right now. I have had a great
season and am playing some good matches here. Now I can end the year at No.1. I am only the tenth one to do it, so I am really proud”, added Caroline.
When asked about her Italian opponent, the Dane maintained that she was also playing quite well and the battle could have gone either ways.
In the first match of the day, Elena also bounced back from an opening set defeat, thrashing out Stosur in three sets. The final match score was 4-6, 6-4, 7-6(4).
The pair had recently contested at the United States Open with Stosur preventing four match points and winning in a third set tie-break in the fourth round. This time, Elena took revenge, closing it out with the help of a service winner down the line.
Elena, while commenting on the match after her victory, said that it was not easy at all after being defeated earlier by Caroline.
