WTA match to watch in the opening round of Olympics – Tennis News
Sara Errani vs. Venus Williams
World number nine, Sara Errani, is scheduled to take on the former world number one, Venus Williams, in the opening round clash of the Olympics Championships at Wimbledon, London.
It is expected to be an enthralling encounter between the two competitors with the Italian 25-year-old starlet being the favourite to take the win considering her superior ranking and ability to dig deep and keep the match alive.
However, the 32-year-old Williams is the toughest inferior ranked contender to have in a draw, considering the experience and power of the 69th ranked American.
Williams is capable of putting aside the ninth ranked Italian on any given day, provided that her forehand and backhand thunderous winners hit the sweet part of her racquet.
Last year, both these players face-off against one another in the opening round of the Australian Open and the American veteran plonked the Italian in straight sets.
However, since then Errani has improved a lot and stunned the world by defying all the odds and reaching the grand finale of the Roland Garros French Open in June.
Maria Sharapova of Russia ousted her in straight sets in the final of the year’s second Grand Slam Championship at Paris, France. It shows that there is a loophole in the game play of the Italian.
Errani has always seen difficult against the hard-hitting competitors like Sharapova and Williams falls in that category too. She can smash some blistering aces at her will and dismantle the confidence of her rival with ease.
The ninth seed Italian will have her work cut out in the opening round of the Olympics Championship. Her hunt for the maiden gold medal can see a shocking battering given the American professional discovers her supreme form and
smashes some quick fiery aces that will distort the game plan of her rival.
Williams has the head-to-head lead of 1-0 whilst Errani is the ranked 60 places higher than the American. So, the chances of an epic revenge are there but the American can utilize her experience and gun down the Italian to inch
a step closer to another emphatic gold medal of her career.
