Here is the third part explaining the top ten players on the WTA tour in 2010.
8. Jelena Jankovic
Born on 28 February 1985 in the city of Belgrade, Jelena Jankovic is a professional tennis player from Serbia. The Belgrade born who achieved her career-high ranking of number one back in 2008 is currently ranked number eight in the South African Airways
WTA list.
Jelena started her 2010 campaign by playing in Sydney where she was toppled in the opening round at the hands of Agnes Szavay in three sets.
Seeded seventh at the Australian Open in Melbourne, Jelena got the better of Monica Niculescu and Katie O’ Brien in straight sets before falling at the hands of Alyona Bondarenko in the third round.
Her next competition was the 2010 Monterrey Open, where the right-hander contested as the top seed to win the title. The 25-year-old surprisingly, was toppled in her opening match.
At the 2010 French Open in Roland Garros, Jelena overpowered Alicia Molik in her opening match in two sets. The final match score was 6–0, 6–4. She next overpowered Kaia Kanepi 6–2, 3–6, 6–4, followed by another victory over Alyona Bondarenko in two sets.
In the fourth round, the top ranked Serbian thrashed out Daniela Hantuchova to make her way into the quarters. Jankovic continued her form in the final eight round and beat Yaroslava Shvedova 7-5, 6-4, before eventually bundling out of the event in the semis
at the hands of Samantha Stosur of Australia.
The 1.77-meters tall then competed at the 2010 Wimbledon tournament, where she was seeded number four to win the crown. She however, could not go beyond the fourth round as the right-hander retired in the match against Vera Zvonareva of Russia due to injury.
Despite her fourth round retirement at the All England Club, the Serbian improved her rankings to number two in the world.
Jankovic then travelled to Cincinnati in order to take part in the 2010 Western & Southern Financial Group Women's Open to defend her title. After receiving a first round bye, Jelena beat Vera Dushevina in three sets. In the next round, the Serbian however
was upset at the hands of Akgul Amanmuradova.
At the year’s final major, the US Open in New York, Jelena Jankovic of Serbia once again could not go beyond the third round as she was hammered down by Kaia Kanepi in two sets. Had the right-hander won the US Open title, she would have once again reached
the top spot in the WTA rankings.
Former world number one next competed at the 2010 Toray Pan Pacific Open, where she finished runner-up back in 2009. After receiving an opening round bye, the Serbian defeated Alyona Bondarenko in two sets. In the next round, Jelena was bundled out of the
event at the hands of Kaia Kanepi with a score line of 6-4, 6-4.
She then travelled all the way to China to compete at the 2010 China Open as a third seeded player. In the first round, Jelena brushed aside Klara Zakopalova in two sets before eventually losing at the hands of Bojana Jovanovski in three sets.
Jelena finished the season by taking part in the 2010 WTA Tour Championships, where she qualified for the fourth time in a row. Unfortunately, she could not win any of her group matches and thus ended the season on a disappointing note.
