5. Venus Williams
Born on June 17, 1980 in the city of Detroit, Venus Williams is a professional tennis star from the United States of America. The right hander is currently ranked number five in the South African Airways WTA list.
Williams started her 2010 campaign by playing at the Australian Open in Melbourne. Seeded number six to win the title, the American couldn’t go beyond the quarterfinal round as she was toppled at the hands of Li Na in three sets.The
final match score was 2–6, 7–6(4), 7–5.
She next competed at the Dubai Tennis Championships, as a defending champion where she did well to defend her crown, defeating Victoria Azarenka in the title battle in straight sets. The score line was 6–3, 7–5.
At the Abierto Mexico Telcel in Acapulco, the Florida resident made her way into the semis after bouncing back from a 1–5 third set deficit to Laura Pous Tio in the quarters. She picked up the trophy after brushing aside Polona
Hercog of Slovenia in three sets. The final match score was 2–6, 6–2, 6–3. It was her 43rd career singles crown on the tour.
The 30-year-old next took part in the Mutua Madrilena Madrid Open where she finished runner up to Aravane Rezai in two sets. Williams reached the title battle after getting the better of Francesca Schiavone and Samantha Stosur
on her way. In the doubles contest, the right hander paired up with her younger sister Serena Williams to lift the title.
The American jumped to number two in the world on May 17, 2010 behind only Serena. This was the fourth occasion in the sister’s careers that they have held the first two places.
At the clay court French Open tournament in Roland Garros, Venus Williams was seeded number two to win the title. She got past the third round on the very first occasion since 2006 before falling at the hands of Nadia Petrova in
the fourth round in two sets. The final match score was 6–4, 6–3.
The 1.85 meters tall however did not lose hope and played in the doubles along with her sister Serena Williams.They did well to reach the finals, beating Huber and Anabel Medina Garrigues in the semis. In the title battle, the
American tandem overpowered Kveta Peschke and Katarina Srebotnik in two sets to grab their fourth consecutive Grand Slam women's doubles crown. The final match score was 6–2, 6–3.
Her next competition was the Wimbledon tournament at the All England Club where Venus advanced into the finals on the past three occasions. This year despite her knee injury, she powered her way into the quarters before eventually
bundling out of the event by Tsvetana Pironkova in two sets. The final match score was 6–2, 6–3.
Williams afterwards pulled out of all the events in the United States Open series as a result of her knee injury. She, however, still played at the United States Open as seeded third to win the title. World number five posted victories
in her first three matches to move into the fourth round where she overpowered Shahar Peer in straight sets. She reached the semis after getting the better of Schiavone before eventually losing at the hands of ultimate winner Kim Clijsters in three sets. The
final match score was 4–6, 7–6, 6–4.
The U.S tennis star after few weeks made an announcement that she is going to miss the rest of the season due to her injury. She finished the year ranked number five in the world on the very first occasion since 2002. Venus played
in a total of nine competitions in 2010 and will therefore be looking to increase that number next year.
