WTA upsets on the opening day of Wimbledon – Tennis Special
Iveta Benesova:
British booming starlet, Heather Watson, ousted the Czech beauty starlet, Iveta Benesova, to register an upset in the opening round of the Wimbledon Championships on Monday. She clasped the triumph in straight sets 6-2, 6-1 taking
just around 84 minutes at the Centre Court of All England Club.
Benesova smashed four aces compared to just two of her rival but she wasn’t able to convert a single breakpoint allotted to her. Watson, on the other hand, clinched four of the allotted 20 breakpoints and smashed 24 winners with
just 10 unforced errors. She won the match; grabbing 80 points compared to 57 of her competitor.
Jelena Jankovic:
Former world number one, Kim Clijsters, dumped the Serb superstar, Jelena Jankovic, to mark another upset on the first day of Wimbledon. She bagged straight sets victory 6-2, 6-4 to inch a step closer in her second last Grand Slam
Championship of the career.
She clinched five of the allotted nine breakpoints and just allowed two return breaks to her rival. With 20 winners and 72 points in total, Clijsters claimed her first win in Wimbledon this year. The Belgian superstar will retire
at the end of the US Open 2012. 
Venus Williams:
Russian starlet, Elena Vesnina, dumped the former world number one, Venus Williams, in straight sets 6-1, 6-3 to mark one of the biggest upset of the opening day at Wimbledon. She took around 75 minutes to thump the American to
her second ever first round exit at Wimbledon.
Williams just won one breakpoint throughout the match whilst the Russian doubles specialist grabbed five of the allotted eight breakthroughs to clasp the triumph. Vesnina won 61 points in total compared to just 44 of her rival
and committed lower number of unforced errors that led to her conquest in the clash.
Flavia Pennetta:
Camila Giorgi of Italy trashed her compatriot, Flavia Pennetta, in straight sets 6-4, 6-3 to post a stunning victory in the opening draws at Wimbledon. It was a fast first-round exit for the Italian veteran lasting just a fraction
over 66 minutes at the Court 9 in All England Club.
It was a stiff contest at the start but a flurry of breakpoints for the youngster helped her claim lengthy lead in the set. Both players contested four successful breakpoints in the ratio of 3:1 to Giorgi. Giorgi smashed 25 winners
in the match and saved a breakpoint at a crucial stage to sustain the lead in the second set that proved pivotal in the end.
Daniela Hantuchova:
American professional, Jamie Hampton, ousted the out of form Slovak star, Daniela Hantuchova, in straight sets 6-5, 7-6(1) in the opening clash at Wimbledon. She was expected to win the match provided a pathetic play of the Slovak
who was suffering from a chronic injury. The Slovak tried to turn things around in the second set but couldn’t hang on in the tie-breaker bowing out in an hour and 43 minutes.
