The South African Post Office was announced as the National Business of the Year for 2008 at the National Business Awards in Johannesburg earlier this week. According to the panel of judges, the post office has taken giant steps towards achieving its vision: to be recognized amongst the leading providers of postal and related services in the world. Comments group CEO Motshoanetsi Lefoka, “All employees have been working tirelessly to position the company in the commercial business environment. Through our initiatives that embrace innovation and technology, we intend to continue to improve on our sterling performance. I would like to thank our shareholder, employees, partners and most importantly our customers! Without their commitment, dedication and support, this would not have been possible.”

This is the biggest bunch of horse S**t.

  1. Imagine how KAK the rest of the companies competing must have been...

"Eish we only got 1 international company cancelling - h**l man this was a good year - lets give ourselves da big Bonus - R15 million each - eish man we are da super stars!!"

  2. aaahh, you've got to be kidding me?! I don't even want to know who the competitors were, this is hilarious.....and very, very scary.

  3. They probably were the only candidate running for the award. :)

  4. i dont know why you have head ache about this.

  5. My family and I have been using S.A. post for decades to send letters and parcels back and forth. In all that time only one parcel went astray and that was not South Africa's doing but Canada Post's doing.  For my money, they have done a fine job.

Addition: Just read redhead's answer. Sounds like she had a bad day for sure. I wonder if the problem is corporation wide or perhaps there are problems with specific branches? Sounds like redhead's branch needs a new manager if he is leaving a single person to handle noon hour traffic. If that happened to me over here I would be writing a strongly worded letter with cc to everyone up the chain of command (and the media - over here they sure get off their butts if you bring the media into the fray) Just a thought!

  6. What a joke! Clearly it was fixed, perhaps they paid the judges off with Amazon goods.

  7. If they were up against Eskom I suppose they should be the winners.

I have had no stuff go missing for a long time at the post office so I cant complain. And the staff are generally friendly dispite the long queues of grumpy customers and no aircon (at my PO anyway) and I think they are the only ones who havent gone on strike this year... certainly they deserve an award for that!!

  8. I wonder what Amazon.com think about it unless of course thieving was the No 1 criteria. Shows you far South Africa has lowered its standards and gone down the tubes.

  9. I have a long sad story to tell you - please sit and get yourself a cup of tea and get comfortable.

I heard this news the other morning and after having a good old cackle regarding this with my colleagues in the office, I had to go and post brochures overseas. Now, I have posted enough brochures enough times to know that a 300g brochure costs so much and 600g cost so much. So I took 5 600g brochures and the man at the post office told me it was R25 to go overseas. I told him it was wrong and it was actually R127 - he then argued with me and I told him to check with with his superviser. Off he went, came 10 minutes later saying I was right.  Please let me add, that it was lunchtime, so there was a long queue behind me and only one person at the counter(so he was feeling the pressure) He counted out the stamps for me, (getting confused in the process)  I paid and when I put my stamps on there were some missing (about R100 worth) So I queued again to ask him where all my stamps where. By the time I had reached the front of the queue, he was on lunch. So this was an hour and  a half of my life wasted at the post office. I went back the next day and after they had done stocktake of their stamps, he managed to give me about R60 worth of stamps that he had recovered.

So, I think they were the only ones that entered the competition.

  10. what the h**l?  Post office? Next time it will be home affairs!  That's crazy.

  11. Then who do you think should win then?

Personally when I buy stuff from the net( bidorbuy, have to have, Loot and Kalahari) they get delivered via the post office and nothing has been stolen so far (touch wood).

Yes the queuing is irritating lets hope that award helps them improve.

    ***********

The post office was interviewed on radio when that happened.

And they said Amazon did not even inform them that the were problems and they were surprised as everyone else.

And most people agree Amazon was unfair they did not report the problems then how is the post office suppose to fix them.

Don't get me wrong I am not denying there are problems in the post office but you have got to admit they are way way better then before and we have to recognize that.

  12. You are not the only one with Post Office problems. In the USA they are given a test with one question: "Recite the alphabet". If they fuckitup they are immediately hired.
