Lol in this question i said that Varitek deserved to be harassed and then she posts details and says that he doesnt! Is it just me or should he be harassed? He is hitting .218 with 30 RBI for gods sake! didn't the red sox win the world series last year with him? He can't even catch Wakefield, so Cash does it. Funny note: I was at the Red Carpet thing for the all star game and people were all shouting out to Varitek when he drove by, "Hey Jason, whats your average???" lol

  1. Varitek is the team captain for a reason. Sure he is slumping hard, but he has always been a streaky player. And he calls the best game behind the plate by far in the majors.

  2. hey dont worry at one point i wanted Carlos Delgado from the mets to be harassed when he was batting around .218 also at one point. BUT now hes doing alright

  3. The players voted him and Crede in, neither deserved to be there this year (Though I understand the "Lifetime Achievement" selection for Crede, since it was his only ASG).

The ASG selection needs to be based purely on statistics for that year (Offensive and Defensive).

  4. He TOTALLY should be HARRASSED

There is not a doubt in my mind

  5. "Hey Jason, whats your average???"

OMG i have got to do that when i go to a red sox @ white sox game!!!! thanks for the idea!

  6. Catchers are usually not noted for their hitting.  Only a few of them are good hitters.  While Varitek has been a good hitter in prior seasons, he is bad this year.  But look at the way he calls a game, and thats where he is more valuable.  He is handling the Red Sox pitchers very well, look at Dice-K, Lester, and Beckett.  He doesnt catch Wakefield because 99% of the catchers cant do it, and that is nothing wrong.  Catcher usually take off alot of games, so he takes off the games Wakefield pitches.

  7. i hate when red sox fans try to make up for varitek by saying he handles the pitching staff well so he doesnt have to hit. well they're are six teams that have a better era than the red sox WITH catchers who can hit

take kurt suzuki for example, he bats .287 compared to variteks .219 and he catches a team that has a 3.41 era compared to variteks 3.80 YET jason varitek makes the all-star team because "he handles the pitching staff well"

  8. Why should he be harassed? Because he's in a slump? Because he's not as good of a hitter as David Ortiz or Manny Ramirez?

Or MAYBE because he's caught more no hitters than any catcher in MLB history? Or because of the incredible impact he's had on the Red Sox? Maybe because he helped bring his team out of an 86 year World Series drought? Or how about the way he connects with pitchers? (Oops, sorry, I forgot...he can't catch Wake's knuckleball).

"Hey Jason, what's your average?" Wow, you're hilarious. You think he doesn't KNOW he's doing badly? You think he needs some immature fans to point it out? Seriously. Grow up. The PLAYERS voted him in. Whether or not it was right, they were apparently looking beyond the stat sheet and looking at his great defense and the impact he's had on the Red Sox.

  9. not being a part of this "controversey", i can only offer a few points: (1) jason has had better years, batting average-wise, true and (2) having a good BA is very minor for a catcher, as has been expressed in some other answers. But to say he should be "harassed" is pretty petty (sorry). Here's a test, though, to varitek's true value: If he were put on waivers or released by the red sox, he would have to wait only a matter of minutes before his phone would start ringing--there are about twenty eight big league teams who would love to have him in their lineup, hitting .218 or not--and this includes the yankees.

  10. Trust me, Varitek knows how bad he's slumping. Most players know without their "fans" telling them.

Derek Jeter has gotten booed in Yankee Stadium for slumping. A lot of times, it's the fair-weather fans who are doing it.

Me? I try to keep it in perspective. Players are going to have good and bad days. I trust most of my guys enough to know that they'll break out of a slump eventually.

They're all ready disappointed and frustrated with themselves. The least I can do is have faith in them.
