Hi this is the same guy who got the hamster the other day. and you guys gave me some good tips.....but all my hamster seems intent on doing is biting my finger off! First i went in to take a toilet paper tube out and it ran over to me and bit me. Then the second time (2 1/2 days l8r) i was putting some food out for it and it ran out and bit me multiple times...... I am seriouly looking into a way to "ditch" this hamster. Even though i invested a GOOD amount of money into it. So any help on why my hammy is the freakin devil? or how i can get rid of it humanely would be great. thanks.

  1. First of all don't let it in to the wild...It will get eaten.

Second just let it get ajusted to its new home if your want to feed it then get the bowl out of the cage 1st.

If the hamster is sleeping its going to bite you.(own experience)

If you got a dwarf hamster they tend to be very aggresive so you might want to go to petco store.. they will take it and sell it to someone who wants to adopt it..

  2. Don't release him into the wild. That is inhumane. And don't kill him. First of all if you haven't had time to bond with it there is your because. Maybe he feels threatened by you. Or maybe you have handled another animal and his/her scent is still in your hands. If that is the case wash your hands with a lot of soap. And maybe you should give it time to settle down. Leave it in its cage for a while and in the night/late afternoon while it is WIDE AWAKE  try to talk to him (it sounds stupid but trust me it makes him get used to it) with a gentle voice. (not screaming or not a high pitched voice). If you are scared wear a glove (leather or clean garden gloves is best) and offer it a treat. continue talking. Be patient. If you can gently stroke him. you will see he will soon become tame.

if there is no change in a couple of weeks or you get tired of him call an animal shelter, they might be able to help you.Or at least get your hamster from you and find it another home.

Just try to think how would you feel if you were removed from your home and placed elsewhere with unfamiliar sights/sounds/smells. You will feel threatened  and scared right???

Just give your hamster time to settle and get used to it.

  3. HI YOU SOUND UNEDUCATED ABOUT HAMSTERS!!

BUY A BOOK AND LEARN HOW TO TAME A HAMSTER,

DON'T RELEASE IT INTO THE FREAKIN' WILD! IT CAN DAMAGE CROPS AND NO IT WILL PROBABLY JUST DIE.

IF U SPENT A GOOD HUNK-A-CASH ON HIM BUY A BOOK AND GET EJAMACATED GEEZ

  4. its just got an atitude problem i would go bk and get anew 1 and get rid of that 1 if u want that is or if u want to get rid of it then sell it to the pet shop hope this helps

  5. "DITCH" ?       Okay dude before you kill the thing..... you need some advice!!

It sounds like you have some hamster problems so go to the pet store... ask for them to take your hamster back for a new one. Explain to them that thee is nothing wrong with you hamster except that it hates you and wont stop being homicidal. This time socialize with your hammy before actually getting it. Let me know how this works out for you.... take good care of him..and dont KILL HIM!

  6. my hammy would bite all the time. so we let him free in the back yard. it was a open yard with bushes and trees. back to the wild and he was thrilled. good luck

  7. maybe u should leave him for a couple days. if not, get a few treats and hold them and let him come eat them from your hand so he can get used to you. but wash your hands before.

  8. HI lol lol

you need to tame your hamster before your hamster can trust you, your doing the right thing by putting card board tunnels in for him you also need to wash your hands before you  handle them because they might smell food on your hands and probably bite you thinking your fingers are the source of food, you need to do this every time you try to handle them.

you can also give them treats by holding them by the door of the cage so they can take them from you this is another way without getting your fingers bitten off, this also might help put your hand flat on the floor of the cage with the back of your hand facing downward and let your hamster sniff you if you move suddenly though it may result back to the beginning again,

toys help and so do the treats.

your hamster will soon realise that your not a threat and will start to trust you more, the more you handle them the more tame they become.

hope this helps you and your fingers. :)

  10. Connor, I generally don't answer such rude questions but this time I wanted to since you seem totally ignorant about hamsters. Why did you go out and buy a hamster if you have not read up first on how to handle them and take care of them? They are not "devils" but are the cutest pets I have ever seen around, provided you take good care of them. Taming hamsters can be a long process but very rewarding in the end.

Your hamster is still new to his surroundings. He needs time to get used to his new cage, new environment and to you. Hamsters bite when they are afraid and this hammie is definitely scared since you are new to him. I am attaching my guide to taming hamsters for your reading. Read it up properly and learn to handle your hamster. I hope all the rude words you said were only in momentary anger and you would "ditch" your rude thoughts and rude words on your little hamster soon and take care of him!

    Guide to taming hamsters -

Taming your hamster can be a long process, don't expect your hamster to suddenly like be handled over night. It can take weeks or even months depending on the hamster. Here the the steps to handling a hamster -

STEP 1 - When you first get your hamster leave it alone for the first 2 - 3 days to let it get used to it's new cage and surroundings. If you pick him up on the first day itself, he will definitely bite you since you are a stranger to him.

STEP 2 - Once the hammy seems comfortable in his new cage, start talking to him softly and hang around his cage enough for him to get used to your voice and smell. After this time feed your hamster some treats from your hand so he get used to seeing your hand. This might take a few days to happen but be patient. If you feel that the hamster still bites you, you can use gloves initially.

PRECAUTION - always interact with the hamster only when he is active. If you touch him or disturb him when he is sleeping, he can get angry and bite viciously.

STEP 3 - Once your hamster seems confident with taking treats out of your hand you can try to start handling your hamster. Before you handle your hamster make sure you have washed your hands well. Hamsters have a strong sense of smell. If they smell something on your hand they may mistake it for food and decide to bite!

Get a cup or something similar and place it into the hamster's cage. He should come to investigate and crawl inside. Take the hamster and cup out of the cage and let him walk out onto your hand. While you do this make sure you're sat down or sat close to the floor incase your hamster decides to jump. Let him walk from hand to hand. Be careful you don't grab or wrap your hands around your hamster until he is fully tame as this may scare him and he will jump out of your hand.

STEP 4 - Once your hamster is more confident with you, you can start to pick up your hamster straight from it's cage. Just make sure your hamster is aware that you are there, if not you may suddenly scare the hamster and it may turn around and bite you.

Best way to hold hamsters is to make them climb into one hand and cupping the other hand softly over the body so that his head pokes out from the gap between your two hands. Remember, do not apply any pressure on his body, he will get scared and snap at you.

I am sure your hammy will get used to you in a few weeks and would be your best friend soon. All the best!

  11. maybe because its not used to you or maybe you have food smuthered around your hand

  12. If you want to get rid of it, give it away to a good, trustworthy friend or to your local pet shop. If you don't think you will manage to have the hamster be a lil' angel, then just get rid of it.

  13. you have to leave a hamster to settle in for at least 3 days before trying to tame it. Your hamster could be territorial, maybe the cage is too small? maybe it was just scared of your hand. some hamsters will never stop biting, you just have to live with it. try wearing gloves when taming it.

DO NOT set it free or kill it. if you can't be bothered to take the time to try and tame the hamster, you shouldnt have gotten one.

did you research how to take care of a hamster before getting one?
