Serena William’s foot injury; Here it goes again

The World Team Tennis Season 2010 is in progress. This year the current World Number 1 in both singles and doubles, Serena William was expected to represent the Washington Kastles team. Four of her matches were scheduled at different venues, but the foot injury has prompted her to withdraw from the WTT season. Williams cut her foot on some glass on her way to the Glens Falls civic Centre. The injury was so severe that resulted to stitches on the bottom of her foot which was a clear indication that she was going to miss her next games of WTT. Serena has expressed her remorse that she is un-sure she will be able to return to the game in the recent times.

It was the fifth World Team Tennis tournament. Serena has always been keen to attend this summer pro league each year because it allows her to see her homeland and meet her own people. Serena’s team Washington Kastles will be playing their matches in Philadelphia, Washington and New York next week.

The 13-times Grand Slam singles champion won her fourth Wimbledon crown this month. She was in brilliant form and nothing could stop her from reaching the top spot in Wimbledon. The same level of performance was expected by her in the next tournaments. However, she couldn’t perform well and lost the exhibition match last Thursday. She faced the Belgian Kim Clijsters in the presence of a record crowd of 35,681 people in Brussels, Belgium but couldn’t create a good impression. Clijseters defeated Serena in straight sets of 6-3 and 6-2 at the King Baudouin Stadium.

It was quite disappointing for the William fans but even more embarrassing was in store for them. The reigning Wimbledon Champion Serena couldn’t play her WTT match which was scheduled against the former World Number 1 and five-time Grand Slam singles champion, Swiss Martina Hingis.

Hingis expressed the hot-and-cold feelings about the upset of this event. She was disappointed that she would miss the opportunity to compete with the current buzz player Serena Williams who was in full form for tennis this season. However on the other hand, Hingis must be indebted to Serena for not being able to play. Hingis is coming back to the game after a three-year lay-off time and she played Venus Williams just two nights earlier in Washington.

Serena Williams and Martina Hingis both held press conferences on Friday at the Great Escape Lodge in Queensbury, New York. They expressed their prospects of the coming games, while Hingis quoted that “We have brought out the best in each other”.

The fans were very excited to watch a great match between the two stars. After the news that Serena William will miss the entire World Tennis Tournament season, some of the fans have actually asked to return their tickets’ money. Nevertheless, it would be a new experience for them to feel the difference with or without the presence of Williams.

This is not the first time for Serena as she has previously suffered the same problem in the Sony Ericsson Open Tournament three months back. She was supposed to contest in the Sony Ericsson tournament but a knee injury forced her to withdraw from the tournament. In a similar fashion, the current WTT season will miss the legendary player due to the foot injury.

In a news flash, Williams noted: "I'm very dissatisfied  that I won't be able to play in the WTT matches this season," said Williams. "It is always such a fun experience and I love interacting with the fans in the cities that I don't often have the opportunity to play in during the rest of the year".

Here is to wishing Serena a very fast recovery.
