What would be the average rank of an American combat medic in WW2? And what would the average rank be for combat medics of the SS?

  1. The majority of German combat medics, from my research, were corporals (obergefreiter in the army) or lower.  They were generally men who had received a crash course in basic first aid, and one was loaned out to each platoon.  They were actually known as Krankentrager.  Sanitaters were more well-trained men who operated at higher echelons of command.  The Krankentrager's job was to get them stabilized enough to be sent back to a field hospital, known as bandaging post.

  2. I would say private for both!

  3. u.s. army

    private first class or cpl.

    a sgt. was a squad leader

    have no idea about the ss

  4. army medics were generally privates. Navy Marine corpsmen were petty officers (nco's).

  5. Sargent or Non Commission officers.

  6. The guys running around between the bullets with first aid kids are anyone from PFC up to sergeant. Above sergeant they were to valuable (and too old!) to run around at the front.

    Same for the Germans. I have no idea about the SS (very likely the same), but the German word is 'Sanitäter' or 'Sanitätstruppen'.

  7. Take a look at this site for WW2 American medics: http://home.att.net/~steinert/duties_of_...
