WWII 1950's to the 1990's

What WWII had the political, econmic or social event that you think had a more powerful impact on the American people,than other events within the same decade?

I beleive when FDR let Algier Hiss and other communists negotiate the end of the war and they let the Soviet Block have anything they wanted as fellow commrads.  This caused the eventual cold war and all th cost and fears associated with it.
