  1. The reasons were political. None of the Allies were open to communism, and the n***s were openly hostile to communism. Therefore the Russians wanted to postpone the inevitable war with Germany until they could build up sufficient forces to fight it.

  2. Stalin seen the pact as a delaying tactic to get his Red Army reorganized after the purges of the 30s that decimated his general staff corps.  He knew that eventually, they would come to blows with the Hitlerites.  They were the world's bitterest enemies and the west was shocked when they signed the non-aggression pact with Germany.

Of course Stalin had a monumental distrust of everyone, including Churchill and FDR.

  3. They were hoping to divide Poland with the n**i as they already had agreed to, and Simutaenuously they were trying to prop up the communist Chiang Kai Shiak in China while fighting the Japanese.

  4. Because, Russia were communists, which was despised by the other Allied powers that were democratic. Communism was feared, and even if Russia had wanted to become allies with them, it's unlikely it would've happened. The Germans saw Russia as a powerful ally to have, and when they both supported the Spanish Civil War, this was proved.

  5. "Its Not Me Its You" is completely right.  The pact was only for a temporary halt on Hitler invading Russia for the land.  Stalin was not stupid.  He may not have been completely prepared for everything that happened in Russia in 1941, but he knew that Hitler would invade Russia at some point.

  6. They wanted Poland?

  7. Right up to the moment that Germany attacked Russia Stalin trusted Hitler. Hitler had promised him they'd split up Europe and Stalin refused to believe any of the many sources that told him that Germany would betray the Soviet Union and attack.

Later they DID ally themselves with the Allies, but they never did trust them and usually only cooperated reluctantly and when it was to their clear advantage. One problem was an incursion by some of the same countries right after WWI into Russia trying to help the White Army defeat the Reds. Russia/Soviets already mistrusted the west and this made it worse.

  8. Why sign the n**i-Soviet pact? They get part of Poland and temporary peace with the n***s.

  9. Originally in the 1930s Stalin wanted a pact with Britain as a defense against Hitler.

When Britain refused he agreed a pact with Hitler on the grounds that it was better to be his friend than his enemy.

He didn't join the axis because he was suspicious of Russians having any form of contact with other nations.
