Wade Phillips fired by the Dallas Cowboys
For the first time in their history, the Dallas Cowboys have fired a head coach in mid-season. The announcement that Wade Phillips would no longer be the coach of the Cowboys was made Monday, a day after a 45-7 loss in Green Bay.
Taking Phillips’ place as an intern head coach will be Jason Garrett, a former back-up quarterback in the NFL. If he does well he may stay on as the coach next year, but with starting quarterback Tony Romo on the sidelines with a broken collarbone, it will
be difficult from him to impress the team’s owner, Jerry Jones.
Phillips has been around the league, and should find a job somewhere before the start of next season. He’s been the head coach of the Denver Broncos, Buffalo Bills, and the Cowboys. He’s also been the interim coach for both the New Orleans Saints and the
Atlanta Falcons.
The Cowboys had a 34-22 record over 3½ seasons with Phillips as the coach, they also won the NFC East twice, but the team has always had the image that they don’t play up to their potential. It’s an image that always reflects poorly on the coach no matter
who it is.
The Cowboys play their next game in New York against the Giants, a division rival. New York’s head coach, Tom Couglin, who coached against Phillips eight times and won four of them, commented on the firing.
“I feel very badly for Wade, to be honest with you,” Coughlin said “It’s a highly competitive business that we’re in, and we want to win and we want to win every game. That’s the nature of our profession. No one wants to see a coach dismissed or have his
family go through what they’re going through, so from a professional standpoint and someone that’s one of the 32, we extend our best to Wade and his family.”
