Wagabees: The dangerous world of wannabe Wags
In the past there were wags, the wives and girlfriends of footballers who were usually ordinary women, who after marrying or dating a football star, had become famous celebrities. There are numerous examples of these women around, from Colleen Rooney to Alex Curran to Abigail Clancy and many others.
The stardom that surrounds a football player has led to a new group of women emerging - the Wagabees. This is the name for wannabe wags that are looking to bag a footballer in a bid to live a star studded life. This is a fairly recent and disturbing trend that is not doing anything positive for anyone involved, except for the footballers.
Quite recently, the World Wide Web along with many newspapers were splashed with cheating footballers and the effect on their partners and wives. Peter Crouch had cheated his wife while Wayne Rooney’s marriage is currently hanging on a thread. Wags have always managed to gather space in British tabloids - making them famous gossip items. Moreover, they launch perfume lines, become fashion designers and become famous sometimes for simply being the wife of a footballer. These wannabe wags out there want this for themselves. They are ordinary girls who want nothing more than to seduce and start dating a football player - if they do get married to a footballer, then their life is expected to change big time. It seems there are ways and means to go about this that has almost been perfected into an art.
According to experts, there are communities and elite networks that are solely used for Wagabees in order for them to gain access to clubs where football players might be seen who they offer advice and skills that are needed to grab one of them. It is a dark world that sees young women fighting with other young women over a seat near a footballer or the opportunity to buy him a drink. The shortest dresses and the most revealing necklines are on display at clubs and bars with the intention of trying to seduce a player and divert his attention from other women in the club. Fights routinely break out and women become devastatingly mean and vindictive. Women hover around a footballer and do not even care if he is married or is in a serious relationship - they just want to lure him away with their charms. The level of focus and cunning abilities on display are at times scary. If that much attention to detail and effort was spent in the pursuit of something worthwhile, these women could accomplish great things on their own.
Magazine interviews with potential Wags have revealed that they feel there are a lot of benefits in becoming future miss footballers. Some of the responses that have been received when asked why they follow football players have been downright worrying. One young lady said that if only she could start dating a footballer, her life would change, she would have money, cars and a good life. She did not stop there - dating a footballer is only the tip of the iceberg. Even bedding a famous footballer is good enough for these women who cite examples of their friends who have slept with married footballers and then in order to keep them shut and not go to the press, footballers have given them cars and money. This is a dangerous road where love has been replaced with the single minded pursuit of money.
Psychologists are getting worried about this trend as well. They think that women are more readily willing to become objects for s*x instead of going out and earning money for themselves. The easy option of dating a famous person is seen as being much better than using their own skills and talent to achieve their own goals in life. This also has negative implications on the future generation. A survey of 13-19 year old girls found that a whopping 50% of them wanted to be wives and girlfriends of famous footballers instead of having a career for themselves.
Hopefully this trend can be reversed in the future, with young women being told that a footballer is not the only way to get ahead in this world. The blame of this lies with many people; the people who pay football players insane amounts of money to kick a ball around, the media outlets that splash pictures of Wags all over and the young women themselves who should be getting good education instead of chasing sports stars.
