  1. It sounds like you are the subject of an IRS Substitute for Return Assessment.  IRS has prepared a return for you without your help and you let it happen.

The first thing you must do is file a correct return for all years that are missing, not just 2006, then your financial situation has to be analyzed to determine your ability to pay.

Finally, your wages have not been "garnished" as they would by a normal creditor.  They have been subjected to a Notice of Levy on Wages Salary and Other Income.  A garnishment would be good news by comparison.  On the wild presumption that you are a single person paid bi-weekly, the amount you will be paid is $344.23 per paycheck starting with your next paycheck until you make peace with IRS or the account is paid in full, whichever comes first.  You will need to move in a hurry if you want to fix the problem before it fixes you.

  2. You need to file your return. The IRS doesnt know your deductions. Once you file if you are due a refund you will get your money back.

  3. If you didn't file you own return, then file your own return now. IF you don't have all your wage information (w2) contact IRS at 1-800-829-0922. they will send them to you.

  4. Have you been in trouble with the IRS before?  Or was the IRS sending you notices that you ignored, or did not get?  Does the IRS have your current address? I have never heard of the IRS garnishing wages for the previous tax year...

Hard to get out of a wage garnishment or tax levy from the IRS.  But if you did not file your tax return, the first thing you need to do is to file a tax return for 2006 - it sounds like the IRS may have filed a tax return for you and decided you owed them money and tapped into your paycheck to get it.

  5. I would advise calling them, they will not garnish without prior notice of their intent, cal them and get the full details if you no longer have the paper work they sent you.
