Question:

Wages in Britain?

I would like to compare "actual" wages between Britain and Australia these days.

I know that in Feb 2008, the average annual UK wage was £455.77pw and the average Australian wage was $1,173.50 according to official figures detailed at(www.britzinoz.com/info/wages.htm) but I would like to know what the REAL wages are like.

So can anyone tell me what these occupations earn in Britain these days: Gross per hour would help.

Supermarket Checkout Operator

Policeman with X years exp.

Electrician Employed (not self employed)

Office Clerk (payroll for example)

Thanks

  1. I know that the starting wage for Police in the UK is around £23k p/a and for Oz its around $51kp/a.

So that would be about £1200p/m for Police after tax and everything else etc

Not sure what they remove in Oz as i don't recall but there would be some form of deductions.

  2. the UK minimum wage at the moment, I think is £5.73 per hour, so that's probably what someone working on a supermarket checkout would get when they first started.

As for the rest - sorry I don't know.  I guess the office clerk would be on about £700-1,000 per month (after tax and depending on their level of experience), but I really wouldn't know what electricians or police earn.

  3. Hi, I remember you answered my question "moving from australia to UK."

Both countries have different wages for different professions. One should choose where to go based on their OWN profession, not by what others say, becaouse anyone can say anything they want on the internet. I am a future pharmacist, and I plan to go to UK for license, one of the reasons being that the pay rate for pharmacists in UK is quite higher(In contrast, for labor workforce and several other jobs, Australia is a lot higher). I think the income tax rate becomes higher than UK if you earn more than AUD$95,000, even if you add NHI contributions.

Also, pharmacists in UK can earn 50k pounds or more per year, but for aussie pharmacists, this is a dream! And the other reason I want to leave Australia is that I feel Australia is more underdeveloped compared to the rest of the 1st world countries. As a non-aussie, Aussie lifestyle actually sucks. It's toooo slow paced and BORING

  4. i cant agree more with the last person (sorry forgot name), i am australian born and raised here but  after travellying most of the worlds including england, i have unfortunately become quite dissatified with this country so am planning to move to London early next year, the money is a worry for me to but Australia isnt the right place for me. Good luck though!!
