Question:

Wages living in London, UK?

I'm currently living in Canada with a purposefully low standard of living. There is a charity I love in London, England looking to hire someone in my field. The starting salary is £13,500 – £15,000. As much as I think I'd love what I'd be doing, that seems like a big change and I'm worried the salary may be too low.

What kind of quality of life, living in London, could I expect based on that salary? As I've said, I have a low standard of living, but I'm not an ascetic or dirty hippie either. :)

  1. It'll be very tough, but if you're used to living an economical lifestyle and are single you should be able to do it.

You'll probably need to flat share somewhere in a larger house (rents for one beds start at £800 a month).  The lowest rents I've seen are £300-£350 per month.  Probably in East London.

Food is expensive, and not normally that good, unless you go to non touristy ethnic places.  Tooting in South London has cheap food if you like Indian stuff.  Rents are a bit cheaper too.  Though some people find it frightenning due to the large number of Indians.

If you want to use the Tube, you'll need an Oyster.  My Zone 1-3 card was £1,080 last year (Tooting is Zone 3).
