A golfer hits a golf ball with an initial velocity of 48 m/s at an angle of 25 degrees with the horizontal. Knowing that the fairway slopes downward at an average angle of 5 degrees, determine the distance d between the golfer and point B where the ball first lands.

  1. The formula for the range (horizontal distance travelled) by a projectile is given by

    R = V^2(sin 2A)/g

    where

    R = range

    V = velocity at launch = 48 m/sec.

    A = angle of launch = 25 degrees

    g = acceleration due to gravity = 9.8 m/sec^2 (constant)

    Substituting appropriate values,

    R = (48^2)(sin 2*25)/9.8

    R = 180.10 meters

    Since the fairway slopes downward at angle of 5 degrees, then the point at which the ball lands first will be

    Distance = d = 180.10/cos 5

    d = 180.79 meters
