    - long ridge of rugged mountains run through the centre of Japan

    - steep tree-lined slopes, and deep valleys on the Pacific Ocean side

    - lowers hills and mountains along the Sea of Japan side

    - elevations greater than 9,800 ft. (3,000 m) - (Akaishi, Hido and Kiso ranges)

    - highest point is Mt Fuji - a dormant volcano

    - coastal areas have small plains

    - many volcanic landforms such as flow plateaus, lava domes and calderas

    - largest river is the Shinano

    - river flow quickly down mountain slopes to the coast - short rivers

    - Tone R. is most important - flows for 200 miles (320 km)

    - islands are along Ring of Fire so many strong earthquakes and some volcanic eruptions

    - Hot springs are numerous

    - Pacific side south of Tokyo - many natural harbors because coastline is quite indented
